The manufacturing process for easy-open ends (EOEs) is very demanding process. It requires packaging steel grades which can withstand complex rivet-forming operations resulting in a high production rate and a very low level of spoilage.
For a reliable rivet-forming process, packaging steels for EOEs must have excellent cleanliness and high ductility in all directions.
The high level of pressure resistance required for the retorting process comes from a combination of the packaging steel’s thickness and hardness.
ArcelorMittal’s range is suitable for EOE manufacturing processes including: three- or four-step rivet forming); end rectangular shape; and can retorting (with or without counter-pressure). Recommended grades include:
For smaller diameter cans and demanding processes the standard grades TH435 and TH460 are available.
For non-round ends, the seaming ability of the packaging steel is the limiting parameter and prevents the use of hard grades. Grades TH330 and TH415 are typically used.
Metallic coating: Tin coating or ECCS. ECCS can be used when the can’s contents are not aggressive.
